Cuisine: Indian
Course: Indian Breakfast
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Broken Wheat (Dalia/Godumai Rava)
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 Carrot (Gajjar), finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/Kadugu)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • A few Curry leaves

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Carrots:
Start by steaming the finely chopped carrots. In a pressure cooker, add the chopped carrots along with a tablespoon of water. Pressure cook for 2 whistles and then immediately release the pressure by running the cooker under cold water. Once the pressure is released, take out the carrots and set them aside.

  2. Cook the Dalia:
In the same pressure cooker, add the broken wheat (dalia) and 1/2 cup water. Pressure cook on high for 3-4 whistles, then reduce the heat and cook on low for 2 minutes. Turn off the flame and allow the pressure to release naturally.

  3. Season the Upma:
Heat a teaspoon of ghee in a pan. Once warm, add mustard seeds and allow them to sputter. Add curry leaves and turmeric powder, stirring for a minute. Then, add the steamed carrots and mix well.

  4. Combine the Ingredients:
Add the cooked broken wheat (dalia) to the pan, along with the desired amount of salt. Stir everything together until well combined.

  5. Serve:
Turn off the heat and your nutritious Dalia Khichdi is ready! Serve this dish to your little one with a side of curd (yogurt) and chopped bananas for a wholesome breakfast or lunch.

Note:
This recipe is ideal for babies and toddlers over 10 months old. It’s a great source of fiber and can be easily adapted to suit your baby’s tastes by adding different vegetables or mild spices.

This should be well-suited for the Love With Recipes site, with its clear instructions and age-appropriate serving suggestions!
