Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Horsegram Dal (Kollu/Kulith)
- 1/2 cup Sesame Seeds (Til)
- 2 tablespoons Arhar Dal (Split Toor Dal)
- 2 tablespoons Chana Dal (Bengal Gram Dal)
- 6 Pearl Onions (Sambar Onions)
- 2 tablespoons Coriander Seeds (Dhania)
- 1 tablespoon Methi Seeds (Fenugreek Seeds)
- 20 grams Tamarind (lemon-sized)
- 1/4 cup Fresh Coconut (grated)
- 4 Fresh Red Chilis
- 6 cloves Garlic
- Salt, to taste
For Tempering:
- 2 teaspoons Oil
- 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds (Rai/Kadugu)
- 1/2 teaspoon Chana Dal (Bengal Gram Dal)
- 1/2 teaspoon White Urad Dal (Split)
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves

Roast the Horsegram and Sesame Seeds:
Dry roast the horsegram and sesame seeds separately over medium heat until they turn a dull brown color. Set them aside once roasted. -
Prepare the Spice Mixture:
In a tawa (pan), heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Add the arhar dal, chana dal, fenugreek seeds, and coriander seeds. Roast these until golden brown. Then, add the fresh red chilies, pearl onions, garlic, and tamarind. Roast the mixture for an additional minute and allow it to cool. -
Grind the Chutney:
Once the roasted ingredients have cooled, transfer them to a blender along with the roasted horsegram and sesame seeds. Add the grated coconut, salt, and water (as needed) to form a smooth paste. -
Prepare the Tempering:
Heat a tempering pan with oil. Add the mustard seeds, chana dal, and urad dal. Let them sputter, then add the curry leaves. Stir the tempering and pour it over the ground chutney. -
Serve:
Transfer the chutney into a serving bowl and enjoy it alongside Oats and Coconut Dosa or Vengaya Sambar for a healthy and wholesome breakfast.
