Cabbage Palya (South Indian Style) Recipe

Cabbage Palya is a delicious and healthy South Indian vegetable dish that is prepared differently across various regions. It involves finely chopping cabbage and cooking it with tomatoes and garlic, creating a flavorful side dish that’s perfect for daily meals or packed lunches. Instructions:

  1. Preparation of Cabbage:

    • Start by finely chopping the cabbage. Boil water in a saucepan and add the chopped cabbage. Let it cook for about 5-7 minutes until slightly tender. Once cooked, drain the water and set the cabbage aside.
  2. Tempering:

    • In a pan, heat the mustard oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter for about 10 seconds.
    • Then, add a pinch of asafoetida (hing), curry leaves, green chilies, and grated garlic. Sauté for a few minutes until the garlic turns golden brown.
  3. Cooking the Vegetables:

    • Add finely chopped onions to the pan, along with salt, and cook until the onions become soft and translucent.
    • Once the onions are soft, add the prepared cabbage to the pan and stir well. Let it cook for about 1 minute.
  4. Adding Tomatoes and Other Ingredients:

    • Next, add the chopped tomatoes, grated coconut, and fresh coriander to the pan. Mix everything thoroughly.
    • Let the cabbage and tomatoes cook together for a few more minutes until they are well combined and cooked through.
  5. Serving:

    • Once the dish is fully cooked, turn off the heat. Serve the Cabbage Palya hot with rice, roti, or enjoy it with a side of mixed vegetable sambar for a wholesome meal.
