Instructions

Cook the Moong Dal
To begin, rinse the yellow moong dal thoroughly. In a pressure cooker, add the dal, 1 cup of water, and turmeric powder. Close the lid and cook for 2 whistles, then allow the pressure to release naturally. -
Prepare the Dal
Once the pressure has released, open the cooker and add 1-1/2 cups of water and salt as per your taste. Turn on the heat and bring the dal to a gentle boil. -
Temper the Dal
While the dal is cooking, heat ghee or oil in a small tempering pan. Once the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Let the cumin seeds splutter. Then, add the chopped mint leaves and red chili powder. Sautรฉ for a couple of minutes until the mint releases its fragrance. -
Combine and Simmer
Pour the tempering (tadka) into the boiling dal and stir well to combine. Let the dal cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse. -
Serve
