Gyros Recipe with Tzatziki Sauce 🥙

Ingredients:

For Tzatziki Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
For Gyros:
  • 1/2 pound ground lamb
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground fenugreek
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Warm pita bread, for serving
  • Sliced tomatoes and onions, for garnish

Instructions:

For Tzatziki Sauce:
  1. In a bowl, combine the yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, and black pepper. Mix well.
  2. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least one hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. After chilling, whisk the yogurt mixture until smooth.
  4. Pat the cucumber dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  5. Dice the cucumber and finely chop the fresh dill.
  6. Fold the cucumber and dill into the yogurt mixture.
  7. Season with salt to taste.
  8. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
For Gyros:
  1. In a glass bowl, mix together the ground lamb and beef.
  2. Add minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, ground fenugreek, and ground cumin to the meat mixture. Mix until well combined.
  3. Stir in the egg until fully incorporated.
  4. Gradually add breadcrumbs to the mixture, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
  5. Form the meat mixture into two large patties.
  6. Preheat a grill to medium-high heat.
  7. Cook the Gyros patties on the grill for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and slightly charred.
  8. Remove the Gyros from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes before slicing.

Serving:

  1. Warm the pita bread either on the grill or in the oven.
  2. Slice the Gyros patties thinly.
  3. Fill each warm pita bread with sliced Gyros meat.
  4. Top with fresh sliced tomatoes, onions, and a generous dollop of Tzatziki sauce.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy the burst of flavors in every bite!
