Ingredients:

  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 1/2 cloves garlic
  • 300g chicken drumsticks
  • 1 chicken wings
  • 1 tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup thick soy sauce
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients:

    • Peel and thinly slice the yellow onion.
    • Mince the garlic cloves.
    • Rinse the chicken drumsticks and wings under cold water, then pat them dry with paper towels.
    • Cut the tomatoes into wedges.
  2. Cook Chicken:

    • Heat enough cooking oil in a wok or large skillet to cover the bottom.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the chicken drumsticks and wings.
    • Cook the chicken until it is half-done, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Remove the chicken from the wok and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onion and Garlic:

    • Heat more cooking oil in the wok.
    • Add the sliced onion and minced garlic.
    • Stir-fry until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Combine Ingredients:

    • Return the half-cooked chicken to the wok with the onion and garlic.
    • Stir-fry for another 2 minutes to combine the flavors.
  5. Add Tomatoes and Soy Sauce:

    • Add the tomato wedges to the wok.
    • Pour the thick soy sauce around the edges of the wok.
    • Stir everything together to coat the chicken and vegetables evenly.
  6. Add Liquid and Seasonings:

    • Pour in enough water to cover the chicken.
    • Sprinkle the ground nutmeg over the ingredients.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Simmer:

    • If the sauce seems too watery, let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes to allow excess water to evaporate.
    • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  8. Serve:

    • Once the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly, it’s ready to serve.
    • Transfer the Smoor Ayam to a serving platter.
    • Serve immediately with fragrant rice or potatoes.

Tips:

  • Substitute Potatoes: If you prefer, you can substitute some of the chicken with potatoes. Simply peel and dice the potatoes, then add them to the wok along with the chicken.

  • Adjust Seasonings: Feel free to adjust the seasonings according to your taste preferences. You can add more soy sauce for a saltier flavor or increase the amount of ground nutmeg for a richer aroma.

  • Garnish: For a pop of color and freshness, garnish the Smoor Ayam with chopped green onions or cilantro before serving.

  • Make Ahead: This dish can be prepared ahead of time and reheated before serving. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

  • Pairing: Smoor Ayam pairs well with a side of steamed vegetables or a crisp salad for a complete and satisfying meal.

  • Enjoy: Enjoy this flavorful and aromatic Indonesian-Dutch fusion dish with family and friends! 🍽️🌟
