Adapted to suit the needs of my own family, I find myself whipping up these loaves of goodness twice a week, savoring every slice that’s so much better than anything store-bought.

Ingredients:

Quantity Ingredient
2 cups hot water
1 can evaporated milk
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup molasses
2 packs active dry yeast
2 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups oatmeal
4-5 cups whole wheat flour
4-5 cups white flour

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all liquids and stir well until fully incorporated.

  2. Add sugar, salt, and yeast to the liquid mixture. Allow it to stand for 5 minutes to activate the yeast.

  3. After 5 minutes, add the eggs and oatmeal to the bowl, stirring until well combined.

  4. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring continuously until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl.

  5. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it, gradually incorporating the remaining flour, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

  6. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size.

  7. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release the air bubbles, then divide it into 4 equal portions.

  8. Shape each portion into a loaf and place them into greased loaf pans. Cover the pans and allow the dough to rise again until doubled in size.

  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for 25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and produce a hollow sound when tapped.

  10. Once baked, remove the loaves from the pans immediately and transfer them to wire racks to cool completely before slicing and serving.
