Mixed Coleslaw Recipe

Description:

Make ahead and chill well. This colorful salad keeps for several days. Excellent fall and winter salad or side dish. Try it on hot dogs for a tasty change of pace.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups red cabbage, shredded
  • 2 cups green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 turnip, grated
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 tablespoon celery seed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Vegetables:

    • Mix shredded red cabbage, green cabbage, thinly sliced onion, grated carrot, and grated turnip together in a large bowl.
  2. Prepare Dressing:

    • In a saucepan, combine granulated sugar, white vinegar, wine vinegar, salt, pepper, dry mustard, and celery seed.
  3. Cook Dressing:

    • Bring the liquid mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. Combine:

    • Pour the hot liquid mixture over the prepared vegetables in the bowl.
  5. Mix Thoroughly:

    • Gently toss the vegetables with the dressing until they are evenly coated.
  6. Chill:

    • Cover the bowl and chill the coleslaw in the refrigerator for several hours before serving, allowing the flavors to meld together.
