Ingredients:

  • 2 heads of cabbage
  • 6 slices of bacon
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 can of tomato soup
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Cabbage: Start by removing any bruised leaves from the cabbage and cutting out the center core.

  2. Soften Cabbage: Place the prepared cabbage heads in a large pot and pour boiling water over them to soften.

  3. Cook Bacon and Onion: While the cabbage is softening, sauté the bacon and onion until the bacon is cooked through and the onion is translucent.

  4. Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine half of the tomato soup with beaten eggs, salt, pepper, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, ground beef, ground pork, ham, and cooked rice. Mix everything thoroughly to ensure even distribution of flavors.

  5. Assemble Rolls: Carefully separate the softened cabbage leaves and drain them. Place a heaping tablespoon of the filling mixture at the core end of each cabbage leaf. Roll the cabbage leaves around the filling, tucking in the ends to secure the rolls.

  6. Layer in Pot: Arrange the cabbage rolls in layers in a Dutch oven or heavy kettle.

  7. Add Sauce: Chop any small, unused cabbage leaves and place them over the rolls. Pour the remaining tomato soup over the rolls, and add enough water to cover them completely.

  8. Simmer: Cover the pot and simmer the cabbage rolls over low heat for 2 to 2-1/2 hours, allowing the flavors to meld together and the cabbage to become tender.

Serve hot and enjoy the delightful flavors of this classic Croatian dish! Whether you’re sharing it with family or friends, these Sarma (Cabbage Rolls) are sure to be a hit at any gathering. 🥬🍲🇭🇷
