Instructions:

  1. Base Preparation: In a medium bowl, combine all-purpose flour, brown sugar, chopped pecans, cinnamon, and salt. Use a pastry cutter or 2 knives to cut butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine crumbs.

  2. Assembly: Reserve 1 cup of the flour mixture and press the remainder evenly over the base of a greased 8-inch square baking pan.

  3. Rhubarb Filling: In a medium saucepan, mix together the rhubarb (chopped into small pieces), granulated sugar, cornstarch, and grated orange rind. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes for fresh rhubarb or 15 minutes for frozen, until the mixture is thickened. Let it cool slightly.

  4. Layering: Spoon the rhubarb filling evenly over the prepared base. Sprinkle the reserved flour mixture evenly over the top.

  5. Baking: Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Bake the assembled squares for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

  6. Cooling: Allow the squares to cool in the pan before cutting them into squares. Top each square with a pecan half for garnish.

  7. Storage: These squares can be frozen, well wrapped, for up to 2 months.
