Mom’s Oatmeal Bread 🍞

Description: This is a slightly sweet bread stemming from the kitchens of a church in a backwater town in Ohio. Every year the women of the church would gather to make bread for a religious ceremony and every year the aroma of this bread would fill the church hall. You’ll enjoy not only eating this bread, but making it also.

Ingredients:

Quantity Ingredient
1 cup Quick oats
1/2 cup Brown sugar
1/2 cup Whole wheat flour
1 tsp Salt
2 tbsp Margarine
5 cups White flour
1 package Dry yeast
1 cup Warm water
1 pinch Sugar

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Combine quick oats, brown sugar, whole wheat flour, salt, and margarine in a large mixing bowl.

  2. Mix with Boiling Water: Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the mixture and stir until well combined.

  3. Activate Yeast: Dissolve 1 package of dry yeast into 1/2 cup of warm water. (Adding a pinch of sugar here will help the yeast to start rising on its own.) When the oat mixture is cooled to lukewarm, add the activated yeast.

  4. Incorporate Flour: Stir in 5 cups of white flour until a dough forms.

  5. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  6. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp tea towel, and let it rise until doubled in size.

  7. Second Rise: Once doubled, punch down the dough and let it rise again until doubled in size.

  8. Shape the Loaves: Divide the dough into 2 equal portions and shape each into a loaf. Place them in greased 9x5x3″ loaf pans.

  9. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Bake the loaves for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown in color.

  10. Cool and Serve: Remove the loaves from the oven and cool them on a wire rack. For a soft crust, brush the tops of the loaves with margarine.

Enjoy the delightful aroma and flavor of Mom’s Oatmeal Bread, perfect for any occasion or meal! 🌾🍞
