Ingredients:

  • 3 cooking apples
  • 1 lemon
  • 100g butter
  • 125g demerara sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350ยฐF (180ยฐC) to ensure it’s nice and toasty for baking.

  2. Prepare the dish: Take 50g of the butter and use some of it to grease the base and sides of a baking dish. Aim for a dish that’s approximately 25cm x 18cm and at least 5cm deep.

  3. Prepare the apples: In a bowl, combine the lemon juice with 300ml of water. Thinly slice the apples and place them in the lemon water mixture to prevent browning.

  4. Drain the apples: Once all the apples are sliced, drain them in a strainer and give them a gentle shake to remove excess water.

  5. Layer the apples: Arrange half of the sliced apples in the prepared baking dish, spreading them out evenly.

  6. Add sugar and spices: Sprinkle 1 1/2 tablespoons of demerara sugar and half of the cinnamon over the layer of apples. Cut half of the remaining butter into small pieces and scatter them over the apples. Then, sprinkle half of the breadcrumbs over the apples.

  7. Repeat the layers: Create a second layer of sliced apples on top of the first layer, pressing down gently to create an even surface. Sprinkle with another 1 1/2 tablespoons of demerara sugar, the remaining cinnamon, and the rest of the butter. Top with the remaining breadcrumbs.

  8. Cover and bake: Place a sheet of foil over the baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes.
