Ingredients:
| Quantity | Ingredient |
|---|---|
| 1 1/2 | cups water |
| 2 | tablespoons butter |
| 1/2 | cup honey |
| 2 | cups bread flour |
| 1 2/3 | cups wheat flour |
| 1 | tablespoon granulated sugar |
| 1 | teaspoon instant coffee |
| 2 | teaspoons salt |
| 1 | cup water (warm) |
| 2 1/4 | teaspoons yeast |
| 1/4 | teaspoon red food coloring |
| 75 | drops red food coloring (optional) |
| 45 | drops yellow food coloring (optional) |
| 30 | drops blue food coloring (optional) |
| Cornmeal (for sprinkling) |
Instructions:
-
In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, wheat flour, granulated sugar, instant coffee, and salt.
-
Create a depression or “well” in the middle of the dry mixture.
-
Pour the warm water into the “well,” then add the butter, honey, yeast, and red food coloring.
-
Slowly mix the ingredients with a spoon, drawing the dry ingredients into the wet.
-
Once you can handle the dough, begin combining it by hand, kneading thoroughly for at least ten minutes until smooth and consistent in color.
-
Place the dough in a covered bowl in a warm place for one hour to allow it to rise.
-
After the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions.
-
Shape each portion into tubular loaves about 8 inches long and 2 inches wide.
-
Sprinkle the entire surface of the loaves with cornmeal and place them on a cookie sheet or two.
-
Cover the cookie sheet(s) with plastic wrap and let the dough rise for another hour in a warm location.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Uncover the dough and bake for 20-24 minutes until the loaves begin to darken slightly on top.
-
Serve warm with a sharp bread knife and butter on the side. For whipped butter, use an electric mixer on high speed until fluffy.
Notes:
- You can adjust the amount of food coloring drops to achieve your desired color.
- Ensure the water used in the recipe is warm to activate the yeast properly.
- The bread can be stored in an airtight container for a few days or frozen for longer preservation.
- Experiment with different shapes and sizes for a fun twist on presentation.
- Enjoy the taste of Outback Steakhouse’s famous Bushman Bread in the comfort of your own home! 🍞
