Ingredients:

  • 3 onions, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, diced
  • 3/4 lb ground beef
  • 8 oz Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 1 (28 oz) can Italian tomatoes
  • 1 (14 oz) can tomato puree
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup black olives, sliced
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 2 tbsp dried basil
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Water (to clean cans)

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a large Dutch oven or stockpot over medium heat.

  2. Add diced onions, diced garlic, and sliced mushrooms. Sauté until browned.

  3. Add ground beef and Italian sausage (casings removed). Break up the meat and cook until browned thoroughly.

  4. Stir in Italian tomatoes, tomato puree, tomato paste, and sliced olives. Mix well.

  5. Use a little water to rinse out the cans of tomatoes and add to the sauce.

  6. Pour in the dry red wine.

  7. Add basil, oregano, parsley, red pepper flakes, thyme, paprika, sugar, salt, and bay leaf.

  8. Allow the spices to meld into the sauce. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat.

  9. Let the sauce simmer for 2 to 4 hours, stirring occasionally.

  10. Meanwhile, boil water and cook thin spaghetti according to package instructions.

  11. Once the sauce is done, remove the bay leaf.

  12. Serve the spaghetti topped with the sauce and garnish with grated Romano or Parmesan cheese.
