Grilled Nile Tilapia: A Flavorful Indonesian Delight

Discover the vibrant flavors of Indonesia with this succulent Grilled Nile Tilapia recipe. Infused with aromatic spices and finished with a savory glaze, this dish is perfect for a cozy dinner or a special gathering. Follow these steps to create a mouthwatering grilled fish that will impress your family and friends.

Ingredients

For the Fish:

  • 1/2 kg Nile tilapia (cleaned and butterflied)

Spice Paste:

  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of turmeric
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Glaze:

  • Sweet soy sauce (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 5 small red chili peppers (finely chopped)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Butter (for basting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fish:

    • Rinse the Nile tilapia thoroughly and cut along the back to create a butterfly fillet. This helps the spices penetrate the fish and ensures even cooking.
  2. Make the Spice Paste:

    • In a blender or food processor, combine garlic, turmeric, ginger, coriander seeds, and salt. Blend until you achieve a smooth paste.
    • Rub this spice paste generously over all surfaces of the fish. Let it marinate for a few minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
  3. Prepare the Glaze:

    • In a bowl, mix sweet soy sauce, lime juice, chopped red chili peppers, and a pinch of salt. This glaze will add a delightful sweetness and tanginess to the grilled fish.
    • Note: This glaze is used for brushing on the fish after grilling.
  4. Grill the Fish:

    • Preheat your grill (or a Happy Call grill pan if you’re using one) to low heat.
    • Place the marinated fish on the grill. Cook gently, turning occasionally, until the fish is about halfway done.
    • Brush melted butter over the fish as it cooks, enhancing its flavor and ensuring it remains moist.
    • Continue grilling until the fish is fully cooked and flaky.
  5. Apply the Glaze:

    • Once the fish is cooked through, brush the glaze mixture evenly over the fish.
    • Allow the fish to grill for a few more minutes until the glaze is caramelized and absorbed into the fish.
  6. Serve:

    • Remove the grilled fish from the grill and serve immediately while it’s still warm.
    • The remaining glaze can be used as a dipping sauce for the grilled fish. For added flavor, you can include thinly sliced shallots in the glaze if desired.

This Grilled Nile Tilapia pairs wonderfully with steamed rice and makes for a delightful and flavorful meal. Enjoy this dish hot for the best experience, and savor the rich, aromatic taste of Indonesian cuisine.
