Gulai Daging Sapi (Indonesian Beef Curry)

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams (1/2 kg) beef, cut into chunks
  • 1 carrot (can be replaced or supplemented with other vegetables if desired)
  • 1 package Gulai seasoning mix (e.g., Indofood)
  • 3 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 package coconut milk (e.g., Kara)
  • 5 kaffir lime leaves
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Cooking oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef:

    • In a large pot, boil the beef chunks in water until they are tender and cooked through. This process can take around 1 to 2 hours, depending on the cut of beef. Once tender, drain the beef and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics:

    • Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced shallots, garlic, and onion. Sauté until the mixture becomes fragrant and the onions turn translucent.
  3. Add the Seasoning:

    • Stir in the Gulai seasoning mix into the sautéed aromatics. Continue to cook for a few minutes until the spices are well blended and aromatic.
  4. Combine Ingredients:

    • Transfer the seasoned aromatic mixture into the pot with the tender beef. Add the carrot pieces (and any other vegetables, if using) to the pot.
  5. Simmer the Curry:

    • Pour in the coconut milk and stir to combine. Add the sugar, salt, and kaffir lime leaves. Reduce the heat to low to prevent the coconut milk from curdling. Simmer gently, allowing the flavors to meld together. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Finish and Serve:

    • Once the curry has thickened slightly and the vegetables are tender, remove from heat. Your Gulai Daging Sapi is ready to be served! Enjoy this rich, aromatic Indonesian beef curry with steamed rice or your choice of side dishes.

This hearty and flavorful dish is perfect for family gatherings or special occasions. Enjoy the delicious blend of spices and the creamy coconut milk that makes Gulai Daging Sapi a favorite in Indonesian cuisine. 😍
