Beef Lasagna: A Foolproof and Delicious Recipe

Lasagna, a timeless favorite, is loved for its rich layers and hearty flavor. This recipe for Beef Lasagna ensures a perfectly baked dish with layers of tender pasta, savory beef sauce, creamy white sauce, and gooey cheese. Here’s how you can make this comforting dish that will impress family and friends alike.

Ingredients:

For the Lasagna:

  • 10 sheets of lasagna noodles (Sanremo brand recommended)
  • 150 grams of coarsely grated mozzarella cheese

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 250 grams of ground beef
  • 400 ml of water
  • 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, finely minced
  • 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
  • 5 tablespoons of bottled spaghetti sauce (bolognese)
  • 3 tablespoons of tomato sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the White Sauce (Bechamel Sauce):

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 500 ml milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 50 grams grated cheddar cheese

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Lasagna Noodles:

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a splash of cooking oil and a pinch of salt.
  • Cook the lasagna sheets in batches, adding no more than 5 sheets at a time. Boil for about 5 minutes or until al dente.
  • Transfer the cooked noodles to a bowl of cold water and then drain them on a colander. This step prevents the sheets from sticking together.

2. Make the Meat Sauce:

  • In a skillet, heat a small amount of oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, sautéing until fragrant and translucent.
  • Add the ground beef and chopped carrot to the skillet. Cook until the beef is browned and the carrot is tender.
  • Pour in the water, and stir until the mixture begins to thicken.
  • Stir in the spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, sugar, salt, oregano, and basil. Simmer until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together. Adjust seasoning to taste. Set aside.

3. Prepare the White Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and stir constantly for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  • Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  • Season with black pepper and salt. Cook until the sauce thickens, then stir in the grated cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

4. Assemble the Lasagna:

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Lightly grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Place 2 sheets of lasagna noodles at the bottom of the dish. Spread a layer of meat sauce over the noodles, followed by a layer of white sauce.
  • Repeat the layering process: add another 2 sheets of lasagna noodles, meat sauce, and white sauce.
  • Finish by topping with the remaining mozzarella cheese and a sprinkle of oregano.

5. Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. Start with 20 minutes on the lower rack and then switch to the upper rack for the remaining 20 minutes to achieve a golden, bubbly top.

6. Serve:

  • Allow the lasagna to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the layers set and makes serving easier.

This Beef Lasagna recipe is not only foolproof but also ensures a delightful meal with its rich layers of flavor and creamy textures. Enjoy this dish as a comforting family dinner or a special treat for gatherings.
