Rica Rica Sapi Pedas: A Flavorful Indonesian Beef Dish

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams beef
  • For the spice paste:
    • 4 shallots
    • 2 garlic cloves
    • 1 small piece of turmeric (about 1 inch)
    • 3 small red chilies
  • Additional seasonings:
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
    • A pinch of black pepper
    • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
    • Cooking oil for sautéing
    • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
    • 3 teaspoons sweet soy sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
    • Sliced onion (1 medium)
    • 3 kaffir lime leaves
    • 2 large red chilies, sliced diagonally

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Begin by washing the beef thoroughly. Place it in a pot with enough water to cover it. Bring the water to a boil, then discard the water and replace it with fresh water. Bring it to a boil again and simmer for about 1 hour, or until the beef becomes tender. Once cooked, remove the beef from the pot, let it cool slightly, and cut it into bite-sized pieces. The beef is now ready to be sautéed.

  2. Prepare the Spice Paste: Slice all the spices into smaller pieces. Using a mortar and pestle or a blender, grind the shallots, garlic, turmeric, and red chilies into a smooth paste.

  3. Cook the Spice Paste: Heat cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the ground spice paste along with the additional seasonings: ground coriander, black pepper, and sesame oil. Sauté until the mixture becomes aromatic and the oil begins to separate from the spices.

  4. Combine Beef and Spices: Add the sliced beef into the pan with the sautéed spice paste. Stir well to ensure that the beef pieces are evenly coated with the spices.

  5. Add the Final Touches: Incorporate the soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, and fine salt into the pan. Add a little water if needed to prevent the dish from drying out. Stir in the sliced onion, kaffir lime leaves, and red chilies. Adjust the seasoning with additional salt or sugar to taste.

  6. Simmer and Serve: Continue to cook the mixture until the beef is well-coated and all flavors are fully blended. The dish should be rich and flavorful.

  7. Garnish and Enjoy: Serve hot with steamed rice for a complete meal. Enjoy the delightful and spicy flavors of Rica Rica Sapi Pedas!

This delicious Indonesian beef dish is perfect for anyone looking to explore bold flavors and enjoy a hearty, comforting meal.
