Savory Sautéed Beef (Cah Daging Sapi) Recipe

Delight in a traditional Indonesian dish with this flavorful recipe for Cah Daging Sapi. This savory sautéed beef combines tender slices of beef with aromatic spices, fresh vegetables, and a hint of sweetness from kecap manis (sweet soy sauce). Ideal for a hearty meal, this dish is sure to satisfy with its rich, comforting flavors.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams beef, cleaned and thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 7 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed and thinly sliced
  • 4 red chilies, sliced (seeds removed)
  • 2 pieces of petai (stinky beans), cut into halves
  • 1 tomato, cut into quarters
  • 3 tablespoons kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 1 stalk green onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1000 ml water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
Begin by thoroughly washing the beef and slicing it into thin strips. Clean and prepare all other ingredients: slice the large onion and shallots, crush and slice the garlic, and remove the seeds from the red chilies before slicing. Cut the green onion into small pieces, the tomato into quarters, and slice the petai beans into halves.

  2. Sauté Aromatics:
Heat a pan over medium heat and add a bit of oil. Sauté the shallots and garlic until they release their aromatic fragrance.

  3. Cook the Beef:
Add the sliced beef to the pan and stir well to ensure that it cooks evenly and changes color.

  4. Add Seasonings:
Pour in the kecap manis and stir to coat the beef evenly.

  5. Simmer:
Add the water to the pan and cover with a lid. Allow the beef to cook until it becomes tender. As the beef simmers, season with salt, sugar, and ground black pepper. If the beef is not yet tender, you can add a bit more hot water and continue cooking until the desired tenderness is achieved.

  6. Incorporate Vegetables:
Once the beef is tender, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Add the sliced large onion and red chilies. Stir well to combine.

  7. Finish the Dish:
Finally, add the chopped green onion, petai beans, and tomato quarters. Stir briefly until everything is well mixed.

  8. Serve:
Remove the pan from heat. The dish should have a small amount of sauce. Serve the Cah Daging Sapi hot and enjoy!

This delightful Indonesian beef dish pairs beautifully with steamed rice or can be enjoyed on its own for a rich, satisfying meal. The blend of savory, spicy, and slightly sweet flavors is sure to be a hit at your dining table. Enjoy! 😊
