Tahu Tek: A Delicious Indonesian Delicacy

Ingredients:

  • 2 blocks of tofu
  • 4 raw eggs
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of high-quality petis (fermented shrimp paste)
  • 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter (without added sugar or other ingredients)
  • Bean sprouts (optional, preferably short-tail variety)
  • Fried shallots (optional, to taste)
  • Fresh chili (to taste)
  • Room temperature water (as needed)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu and Eggs:

    • Heat oil in a pan for frying. Cut the tofu into cubes and fry until golden and crispy on the outside. Drain and set aside.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and fry them in the same pan until they are cooked through. Once done, slice the eggs into pieces.
  2. Make the Peanut Sauce:

    • In a mortar and pestle or blender, grind the garlic and chili together until finely ground.
    • Mix this garlic-chili paste with the peanut butter, petis, and enough room temperature water to achieve a smooth, pourable consistency. Stir well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Assemble the Dish:

    • Arrange the bean sprouts (if using), tofu cubes, and sliced eggs on a serving plate.
    • Drizzle the prepared peanut-petis sauce generously over the tofu and eggs.
    • Optionally, sprinkle fried shallots on top for added flavor and texture.
  4. Serve and Enjoy:

    • Tahu Tek is now ready to be served. This dish is perfect as a savory snack or a side dish in your meal.

Indulge in the rich flavors and unique textures of this traditional Indonesian treat, combining crispy tofu, savory eggs, and a delicious peanut-petis sauce for a satisfying culinary experience.
