Spicy Tofu (Sambal Tahu)

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cut into small cubes
  • A handful of red chilies
  • Optional: a few bird’s eye chilies (if you like it extra spicy)
  • 3 shallots
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 tomato
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 cup water (adjust as needed)
  • Cooking oil
  • Salt, sugar, ground black pepper, and seasoning to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu:

    • Boil the tofu cubes in water with a pinch of salt or seasoning until the flavors are absorbed.
    • Heat a sufficient amount of oil in a pan and fry the tofu cubes until they turn golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  2. Prepare the Sambal (Spicy Sauce):

    • Blend or grind the red chilies, shallots, garlic, and tomato into a smooth paste.
    • Heat a small amount of oil in a pan. Add the sliced onion and sauté until fragrant.
    • Add the blended sambal paste to the pan and cook, stirring frequently.
  3. Combine and Cook:

    • Pour in the water and season with salt, sugar, ground black pepper, and additional seasoning to taste.
    • Allow the sambal to simmer until the flavors meld together and the sauce slightly thickens.
    • Add the fried tofu cubes to the pan, stirring gently to coat them with the sambal. Cook until the tofu is heated through and the flavors are well combined.
  4. Serve:

    • Transfer the spicy tofu to a serving dish and enjoy it hot. Perfect with steamed rice or as a side dish!

Enjoy your homemade sambal tahu, a delightful and spicy tofu dish that’s sure to tantalize your taste buds! 🍴
