Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the chocolate with the boiling water, stirring until the mixture is thoroughly blended and smooth.
  2. Once the chocolate mixture has cooled, add the sugar, shortening, egg, and vanilla, and mix until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, and salt) while alternating with the milk, mixing until just incorporated.
  4. Stir in the white vinegar, then pour the batter into a greased 8 x 8 inch square baking pan.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool completely before applying the frosting.
  7. For the frosting, combine all ingredients except the vanilla and butter in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, bringing it to a boil, and continue to boil for 1 and 1/2 minutes before removing it from the heat.
  8. Place the saucepan in an ice bath (a large bowl filled with ice water) and beat the mixture for 1 minute.
  9. Add the butter and vanilla to the frosting mixture, beating for an additional 10 minutes or until it reaches a creamy consistency suitable for spreading.
  10. Once the cake is fully cooled, frost it generously with the prepared frosting and serve to delight your taste buds.

Enjoy your indulgent slice of Little Chocolate Cake, a perfect blend of rich flavors and comforting sweetness!
