Crispy Tempeh Fritters (Tempe Maknyuus)

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Tempeh 1 block
Batter:
All-purpose flour 5 tablespoons
Sugar To taste
Salt To taste
Ground turmeric 1 cm, finely ground
Ground pepper To taste
Scallions, thinly sliced To taste
Egg 1 large
Water As needed

Instructions:

  1. Slice the Tempeh: Start by slicing the tempeh into thin pieces, but be careful not to make them too thick. Aim for about ¼-inch thickness for an ideal crisp texture.

  2. Prepare the Batter: In a bowl, combine all the batter ingredients—flour, sugar, salt, ground turmeric, ground pepper, and thinly sliced scallions. Crack in the egg and gradually add water. Stir the mixture until it becomes a smooth, lump-free batter. Be cautious not to make it too watery; it should be thick enough to coat the tempeh evenly.

  3. Dip the Tempeh: Once the batter is ready, dip each piece of sliced tempeh into the batter, ensuring that it is fully coated.

  4. Fry to Perfection: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, gently place the battered tempeh pieces into the pan. Fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides, flipping as necessary.

  5. Serve: Drain the fried tempeh on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce or enjoy as is for a crispy, savory snack!

This recipe is perfect for those who love crispy, flavorful bites of tempeh. The turmeric adds a warm, earthy flavor while the scallions bring a subtle oniony taste, making each bite irresistible!
