Tempe Tumis Kecap – A Flavorful Stir-Fried Tempe Dish with Sweet Soy Sauce

Ingredients:

Tempe 1 medium-sized piece (I bought it for 2,000 IDR)
Red onions 3 cloves
Garlic 3 cloves
Red chili peppers 3 pieces
Green chili peppers 3 pieces
Small tomato 1 piece
Small onion (shallot) 1 piece
Sweet soy sauce (Kecap Manis) As needed
Water A small amount
Royco seasoning To taste
Salt To taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tempe: Begin by cutting the tempe into small cubes. Heat oil in a pan and fry the tempe until golden brown and crispy. Once cooked, drain excess oil and set aside.

  2. Sauté the Aromatics: In the same pan, sauté the sliced red onions, garlic, red and green chili peppers, small tomato, and shallot. Stir-fry them until they become fragrant and aromatic.

  3. Combine Tempe and Seasonings: Add the fried tempe cubes to the pan. Pour in the sweet soy sauce and stir well. Add a little water to create some sauce and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

  4. Season: Season with a pinch of salt and Royco seasoning to enhance the flavors. Allow the sauce to simmer and reduce until the flavors meld together and the liquid thickens slightly.

  5. Serve: Once the sauce has reduced and the tempe is well-coated with the flavors, your Tempe Tumis Kecap is ready to serve! Enjoy this savory and slightly sweet dish with steamed rice.
