Crispy Fried Tempe Recipe

For a deliciously crispy and savory Indonesian snack, this crispy fried tempe recipe is sure to delight your taste buds. Simple to prepare, it uses a blend of flour, spices, and seasoning to create a golden, crunchy texture.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Tempe (fermented soybeans) 1 block (150g)
All-purpose flour 150g
Cornstarch (maizena) 2 tablespoons
Ground coriander 1 tablespoon
Ground black pepper 1 tablespoon
Chicken bouillon seasoning 1 packet
Salt To taste
Water As needed

Preparation Steps

  1. Slice the Tempe
Begin by slicing the tempe thinly into bite-sized pieces. Make sure the slices are even to ensure they fry uniformly.

  2. Prepare the Coating
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, ground coriander, black pepper, chicken bouillon seasoning, and salt. Mix thoroughly to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.

  3. Adjust the Consistency
Slowly add water to the dry mixture, stirring continuously. The batter should be smooth and coat the tempe slices without being too thick or too runny. Aim for a consistency that is neither too watery nor too heavy.

  4. Coat the Tempe
Dip each slice of tempe into the seasoned batter, ensuring they are well-coated. For extra crispiness, you can place the coated tempe in the freezer for about 10-12 minutes. If you prefer to plan ahead, refrigerating them for 1 hour is also an option. This step helps the coating adhere better and results in an extra-crispy texture when fried.

  5. Fry the Tempe
Heat a generous amount of oil in a large pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated tempe slices. Fry them in batches, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.

  6. Drain and Serve
Remove the crispy tempe from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve the crispy fried tempe warm as a snack, side dish, or appetizer.

This crispy fried tempe is perfect on its own or paired with sambal or a dipping sauce for added flavor. It’s an easy, savory treat that will keep everyone coming back for more!
