This delicious and simple Indonesian-inspired dish combines crispy tempeh with fresh long beans, all coated in a savory-sweet soy sauce. Perfect as a side dish or a main course, this stir-fry is packed with flavor and nutrients, making it a delightful addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Small Tempeh block 1 block (around 200 grams)
Long beans 250 grams
Shallots 4 cloves
Garlic cloves 2 cloves
Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 3 tablespoons
Red chilies 4 pieces
Bird’s eye chilies 5 pieces
Salt To taste
Sugar To taste
Seasoning (optional) To taste
Cooking oil For frying and stir-frying
Water A little (about 2 tablespoons)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tempeh:
Cut the tempeh into small strips or cubes based on your preference. Fry them in oil until golden brown and crispy. Once done, set the tempeh aside.

  2. Prep the Long Beans:
Clean the long beans under running water, then chop them into small pieces, about 2 inches in length.

  3. Slice the Aromatics:
Thinly slice the shallots, garlic, red chilies, and bird’s eye chilies. Adjust the amount of chilies according to your spice tolerance.

  4. Stir-Fry the Aromatics:
Heat a little oil in a pan or wok over medium heat. Sauté the shallots and garlic until fragrant, then add the sliced chilies. Stir-fry for a few more minutes until the chilies are softened.

  5. Cook the Long Beans:
Add the chopped long beans to the pan, stir them with the aromatics, and add a small splash of water (around 2 tablespoons). Let the beans cook for a few minutes until they are tender but still slightly crunchy.

  6. Season the Dish:
Add the sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), a pinch of salt, sugar, and seasoning (if using) to the pan. Stir everything until well combined. Adjust the seasoning to your taste preference.

  7. Combine with Tempeh:
Finally, add the fried tempeh back into the pan, stirring gently until the tempeh is well coated in the sauce and evenly mixed with the long beans.

  8. Serve and Enjoy:
Once everything is thoroughly combined and heated, your Sweet Soy Stir-Fried Long Beans with Tempeh is ready to be served. Best enjoyed with steamed rice for a satisfying meal!

This recipe offers a delightful balance of savory, sweet, and spicy flavors. The crispy tempeh adds a lovely contrast to the tender long beans, while the kecap manis brings everything together with its signature sweetness. It’s a versatile dish that can be served as a main or side dish, perfect for vegetarians and those looking for a quick yet flavorful meal.
