Spicy Shrimp and Tempe Stir-Fry (Udang Tempe Pedas)

This Udang Tempe Pedas is a vibrant, flavorful dish combining crispy tempeh and succulent shrimp with a spicy, aromatic sauce. Ideal for a quick weeknight dinner, it pairs perfectly with steamed white rice and is a great way to enjoy both protein and plant-based ingredients in one bite. The balance of spicy chili, sweet soy sauce, and savory shrimp makes every mouthful an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Tempeh (thinly sliced) 2 blocks (approximately 200g)
Shrimp (peeled, tail on) 200g
Red shallots (peeled) 10 cloves
Garlic (peeled) 8 cloves
Red bird’s eye chilies (cabe rawit) 6 chilies
Candlenut (kemiri) 1 nut
Tomato (diced) 1 medium
Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) To taste
Salt (garam) To taste
Sugar (gula) To taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tempeh:
Slice the tempeh into thin pieces. Heat oil in a pan and fry the tempeh until golden brown and crispy. Drain excess oil and set aside.

  2. Make the Spice Paste:
In a mortar and pestle (or food processor), grind the red shallots, garlic, red chilies, and candlenut into a smooth paste. If you prefer a spicier dish, feel free to add extra red chilies.

  3. Marinate the Shrimp:
Peel the shrimp, leaving the tails on. In a bowl, mix the shrimp with 1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of pepper. Allow the shrimp to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Cooking the Stir-Fry:
Heat some oil in a large pan or wok. Add the ground spice paste and sauté until fragrant, releasing the rich aroma of the garlic, shallots, and chilies.

  5. Add the Shrimp and Tomato:
Toss the marinated shrimp into the pan and stir-fry until they turn pink and are cooked through. Add the diced tomato and mix well.

  6. Combine with Tempeh:
Gently stir in the fried tempeh, ensuring it is well-coated with the flavorful spices.

  7. Season to Taste:
Pour in the sweet soy sauce, adding a generous splash to balance the dish’s spice. Season with salt and sugar according to your taste preference.

  8. Serve:
Once everything is well combined and heated through, serve this flavorful spicy shrimp and tempeh stir-fry hot with steaming white rice. Enjoy!
