Introduction:
Oseng Tahu Tempe is a simple yet flavorful Indonesian dish made with tofu and tempeh, stir-fried in a fragrant blend of spices. This version is perfect for those who enjoy a balance of sweet and spicy flavors. It’s a great vegetarian dish that can be served alongside rice and a fresh vegetable side like sautĆ©ed spinach. Easy to prepare and full of nutrition, this dish will quickly become a favorite for lunch or dinner!

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Tempeh (cut into cubes) 1/2 block
White tofu (cut into cubes) 3 pieces
Bird’s eye chilies (sliced) 5 pieces
Shallots (thinly sliced) 2 cloves
Garlic (thinly sliced) 1 clove
Bay leaf (optional) 1 piece (slightly torn)
Kaffir lime leaf (optional) 1 piece (slightly torn)
Galangal (optional) 1-inch piece (bruised)
Seasoning powder To taste
Salt To taste
Sugar To taste
Sweet soy sauce To taste
Cooking oil As needed for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the tofu and tempeh:
Heat some oil in a pan and lightly fry the tofu and tempeh cubes until they are golden brown but still soft inside. Remove and set aside.

  2. SautƩ the spices:
In the same pan, heat a little more oil. Add the sliced bird’s eye chilies, shallots, garlic, bay leaf, kaffir lime leaf, and galangal (if using). SautĆ© the mixture until fragrant, ensuring the garlic and shallots are softened and golden.

  3. Combine the tofu and tempeh:
Add the fried tofu and tempeh to the pan, stirring them into the fragrant sautƩed spices. Mix well to coat the tofu and tempeh evenly with the spices.

  4. Season the dish:
Pour in some sweet soy sauce, seasoning powder, salt, and sugar to taste. Stir everything together until the flavors are well combined. Adjust the seasoning according to your preference.

  5. Check and finish:
Taste the dish and adjust the seasoning if needed. Once everything is well mixed and the sauce has slightly thickened, remove from heat.

  6. Serve:
Serve the Oseng Tahu Tempe hot, alongside steamed rice and a fresh vegetable dish like sautƩed spinach for a complete and satisfying meal.

Cooking Tips:

  • Spice level: You can adjust the number of bird’s eye chilies depending on your tolerance for heat. For a milder version, reduce the chilies or use milder varieties.
  • Optional ingredients: If you don’t have bay leaves, kaffir lime leaves, or galangal, you can skip them without compromising the core flavor of the dish. These ingredients simply add an extra layer of aroma.
  • Pairing suggestions: This dish pairs beautifully with a side of sautĆ©ed spinach or another green vegetable for a well-rounded and nutritious meal.

Enjoy your flavorful Oseng Tahu Tempe, and happy cooking! šŸ˜‹
