Curd Rice (Thayir Sadam / Dahi Bhaat) – For Babies & Toddlers Over 10 Months

Description:
Curd rice, also known as Thayir Sadam or Dahi Bhaat, is a comforting South Indian dish that babies and toddlers adore. The creamy, smooth texture of yogurt paired with the slight tanginess and natural sweetness makes it irresistible to little ones. Curd (yogurt) is a fantastic source of probiotics, which support healthy digestion by promoting the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Perfect for babies over 10 months old, this dish is not only nutritious but also simple to prepare, making it an ideal meal for your little one. It can be served alongside a mild vegetable like Carrot Poriyal for a wholesome meal.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Rice 1/2 cup
Curd (Dahi/Yogurt) 1/2 cup
Ajwain Powder 1/4 teaspoon
Salt (Optional) To taste

Preparation Time:

5 minutes

Cooking Time:

20 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Rice
Begin by washing the rice thoroughly with water. Once washed, soak the rice in water for about 20 minutes. This helps soften the rice and makes it easier to mash for your baby.

  2. Cook the Rice
In a pressure cooker, add the soaked rice along with 1 cup of water. Close the lid and cook for 4 whistles. Once the cooker has cooled and the pressure has been released, open the lid and allow the rice to cool down to room temperature on a plate.

  3. Mash the Rice
Once the rice has cooled down, mash it well. You can use your hands or a potato masher to ensure the rice is soft and easy for your baby to eat.

  4. Mix with Curd
Add the curd (yogurt) to the mashed rice and mix them together thoroughly until the rice becomes creamy and smooth.

  5. Season and Serve
At this stage, you can add a pinch of salt if your child prefers it. However, the salt is optional and can be skipped for a milder flavor. Sprinkle the ajwain powder (carom seed powder) on top, as it helps with digestion and relieves gas, making it gentle on your baby’s tummy.

  6. Complete the Meal
Once the curd rice is ready, serve it to your baby or toddler. For a more complete meal, you can pair it with a vegetable like Carrot Poriyal, which is nutritious and easy to digest.

Notes:

  • Make sure the rice is fully cooled before serving to avoid any burns.
  • This recipe can be customized by adding a few more gentle seasonings or vegetables as your baby’s palate develops.
  • Curd rice can also be served as a light lunch or dinner option for toddlers and young children. It is soothing and aids digestion, making it an excellent choice for babies with sensitive tummies.

Enjoy this simple and healthy South Indian recipe for your baby or toddler!
