Mysore Chutney Recipe – Chana Dal Chutney

Ingredients:

Chana dal (Bengal Gram Dal) 1/2 cup
Dry Red Chillies (broken) 5
Lemon juice 1 tablespoon
Salt As required
Dessicated Coconut 1 teaspoon
Tamarind 20 grams
Curry leaves 1 sprig
Ginger (chopped) 1 teaspoon

Preparation Time:

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Cook Time: 45 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    Start by soaking the dry red chillies in warm water for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, soak the tamarind in a little water to extract the pulp.

  2. Roast the Chana Dal:
    Heat oil in a wide pan over low to medium heat. Add the chana dal to the pan and roast it well until it turns golden brown in color. Be sure to roast it evenly to bring out the nutty flavor of the dal. Once roasted, set it aside to cool completely.

  3. Grind the Mixture:
    Once the chana dal has cooled, combine it with the soaked dry red chillies, tamarind pulp, salt, dessicated coconut, curry leaves, ginger, and a bit of water in a blender. Grind the mixture to a coarse paste, ensuring the texture is thick yet spreadable.

  4. Serve and Enjoy:
    Transfer the freshly made Mysore Chutney into a serving bowl. Serve it alongside hot, fluffy idlis or crispy masala dosas. Pair it with a cup of South Indian filter coffee for the ultimate South Indian breakfast or snack experience.
