Ingredients

Ingredient Name Quantity
Yellow Moong Dal (पिली मूंग दाल) 1/2 cup
Red Chili Powder (लाल मिर्च पाउडर) 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder (हल्दी पाउडर) 1/4 tsp
Cumin Powder (जीरा पाउडर) 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida (हींग) A pinch
Ghee (घी) 1 tbsp
Fresh Mint Leaves (पुदीना) 2 tbsp, chopped
Water (पानी) As required (about 1-1/2 cups)
Salt (नमक) As required

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Servings: 2-3

Instructions

  1. Cook the Moong Dal
To begin, rinse the yellow moong dal thoroughly. In a pressure cooker, add the dal, 1 cup of water, and turmeric powder. Close the lid and cook for 2 whistles, then allow the pressure to release naturally.

  2. Prepare the Dal
Once the pressure has released, open the cooker and add 1-1/2 cups of water and salt as per your taste. Turn on the heat and bring the dal to a gentle boil.

  3. Temper the Dal
While the dal is cooking, heat ghee or oil in a small tempering pan. Once the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Let the cumin seeds splutter. Then, add the chopped mint leaves and red chili powder. Sauté for a couple of minutes until the mint releases its fragrance.

  4. Combine and Simmer
Pour the tempering (tadka) into the boiling dal and stir well to combine. Let the dal cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.

  5. Serve
Your flavorful Mint Moong Dal is ready! Serve it hot with Bhindi Masala, Lauki Raita, and soft phulkas for a delicious and nutritious lunch.

This Mint Moong Dal is a delightful addition to any North Indian meal, offering a healthy and protein-packed dish that pairs perfectly with traditional sides.
