Instructions:

Soak the Dal: Begin by washing and soaking the toor dal in a bowl with 2 cups of water for about 10 minutes. Drain the water after soaking.
-
Prepare the Masala:
- In a small pan, dry roast the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, black peppercorns, and poppy seeds until aromatic. Set aside to cool.
- Once cooled, grind them along with the green chili, ginger, garlic, and coriander leaves into a fine masala paste using a little water.
-
Cook the Dal:
- Heat 1 tablespoon ghee in a pressure cooker. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the tomatoes soften.
- Stir in the turmeric powder and ground masala paste. Sauté the mixture for about 3-4 minutes until the spices are well-cooked.
- Add the soaked dal, salt to taste, and enough water to cover the dal. Close the lid and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is tender.
