Andhra Style Pappu Charu

Ingredients:
- 1 cup tur dal (Arhar dal)
- 3 green chillies (or dried red chillies)
- 10 cloves garlic, grated
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tbsp tamarind paste
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
For Tempering: - 2 tbsp ghee
- 6 curry leaves
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida
Preparation Time: 16 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Instructions:
- Wash the tur dal thoroughly and soak it for 15-20 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, chopped tomatoes, onions, green chillies, 6 cloves of garlic, turmeric powder, and 2 cups of water. Mix well.
- Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for 4-5 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally and set it aside to cool.
- Once cooled, open the cooker and mash the dal mixture until smooth.
- Stir in the tamarind paste, salt, and 1 cup of water. Let the dal simmer until it thickens.
- While the dal simmers, prepare the tempering: Heat ghee in a small pan. Add the mustard seeds and allow them to crackle.
- Once the mustard seeds crackle, add asafoetida and curry leaves, cooking for 15 seconds.
- Pour the tempering into the cooked dal, stirring to combine.
- Serve hot with steamed rice and chow chow thoran for a complete meal.
