Moolangi Tovve Recipe
Moolangi Tovve is a simple, comforting South Indian dal dish made with radish and yellow moong dal. The word “Tovve” translates to “simple” in Kannada, and true to its name, this recipe is easy to prepare. It’s perfect for everyday meals and ideal for rainy days, offering warmth and flavor. Serve it with a drizzle of ghee and a squeeze of lemon for an extra touch.

Ingredients:
- 3 radishes, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup yellow moong dal
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 green chillies, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
For Tempering:
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 dried red chillies
- A pinch of asafoetida
- A little coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
- 1 lemon, chopped (for serving)
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Instructions:
- Begin by washing the moong dal thoroughly.
- In a pressure cooker, add the moong dal, radish, turmeric powder, chopped green chillies, and 1 1/2 cups of water.
- Close the cooker and cook on medium heat for 3 whistles. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
- Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and gently stir the dal mixture.
- Heat ghee in a pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds and dried red chillies. Fry them until the mustard seeds crackle.
- Add the cooked dal mixture to the pan along with grated ginger, salt, and an additional 1 1/2 cups of water. Stir well and let it boil until it thickens slightly.
- Once the dal reaches the desired consistency, add the grated coconut and chopped coriander leaves. Stir to combine.
- Serve the Moolangi Tovve with a side of Masala Bhindi, Phulkas, and a refreshing Kachumber Salad.
