Puli Upma (Tamarind & Rice Rava Upma)

Description
Puli Upma, a traditional South Indian snack, doubles as a delightful breakfast option. Its tangy flavor from tamarind and the goodness of rice make it a perfect treat for any time of day.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup Rice
- Tamarind (a small lemon-sized ball), soaked in 1 cup warm water
- 1-1 ¼ cups Water
- 10 Curry leaves
- 2 Dry Red Chillies, broken in half
- ¼ tsp Asafoetida (hing)
- 2 tsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds (Rai/Kadugu)
- Salt, to taste

Instructions
- Wash the rice and spread it on a muslin cloth to dry. Once dry, coarsely grind the rice into rava (semolina).
- Soak tamarind in warm water for 5 minutes, then squeeze out the pulp and strain the liquid. Set it aside.
- Heat oil in a thick-bottomed pan (kadai) on medium heat. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
- Add curry leaves, dry red chillies, and asafoetida (hing). Stir well to combine.
- Stir in the rice rava, followed by the tamarind water.
- Cook on low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens.
- Once the mixture comes together, add salt to taste.
- Serve the Puli Upma with green coriander and coconut chutney, and enjoy with a hot cup of Kumbakonam Filter Coffee for a complete South Indian breakfast experience.
