Puli Upma, a traditional South Indian snack, doubles as a delightful breakfast option. Its tangy flavor from tamarind and the goodness of rice make it a perfect treat for any time of day.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup Rice
  • Tamarind (a small lemon-sized ball), soaked in 1 cup warm water
  • 1-1 ¼ cups Water
  • 10 Curry leaves
  • 2 Dry Red Chillies, broken in half
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida (hing)
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds (Rai/Kadugu)
  • Salt, to taste

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Instructions

  1. Wash the rice and spread it on a muslin cloth to dry. Once dry, coarsely grind the rice into rava (semolina).
  2. Soak tamarind in warm water for 5 minutes, then squeeze out the pulp and strain the liquid. Set it aside.
  3. Heat oil in a thick-bottomed pan (kadai) on medium heat. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
  4. Add curry leaves, dry red chillies, and asafoetida (hing). Stir well to combine.
  5. Stir in the rice rava, followed by the tamarind water.
  6. Cook on low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens.
  7. Once the mixture comes together, add salt to taste.
  8. Serve the Puli Upma with green coriander and coconut chutney, and enjoy with a hot cup of Kumbakonam Filter Coffee for a complete South Indian breakfast experience.
