Dal Chawal/ Paruppu Sadam – Baby & Toddler Recipe (for 10 months and above)

Description:
Dal is a staple in Indian households, enjoyed across both North and South India with variations in recipes. Dal Chawal (also known as Paruppu Sadam) is a perfect introduction to dal for babies and toddlers, typically served with rice or phulkas. It is a nutritious and easy-to-digest meal that can be enjoyed by little ones from 10 months onwards.

Cuisine: Indian
Course: Lunch
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Yellow Moong Dal (Split)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1/4 cup Rice
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 teaspoon Butter (Salted)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)

Preparation Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 22 minutes
Serves: 1-2 toddlers

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Moong Dal:
Wash the moong dal thoroughly. In a pressure cooker, add the dal along with a pinch of turmeric powder and 1/4 cup of water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles, then release the pressure naturally. Once cooked, remove the dal from the cooker and set it aside.

  2. Cook the Rice:
In the same pressure cooker, add the rice with 1/2 cup water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles, then turn off the flame and allow the pressure to release naturally.

  3. Prepare the Dal Chawal:
Place a pan on low heat and add a teaspoon of butter. Once melted, add the cooked moong dal along with a pinch of salt. Mix well and simmer for 2 minutes. Turn off the flame once done.

  4. Combine Rice and Dal:
In a separate bowl, mix the cooked rice and dal thoroughly. If your baby prefers a softer consistency, use a potato masher to mash the rice before adding the dal. You can also adjust the salt to taste.

  5. Serve:
For added flavor and nutrition, serve the Dal Chawal/Paruppu Sadam with a dollop of ghee. Pair with a vegetable like Carrot Poriyal or Buttered Mashed Potatoes to make it a complete meal.

Notes:

  • Ideal for babies and toddlers aged 10 months and above.
  • You can adjust the consistency by mashing the rice and dal together if preferred.
