  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin powder (Jeera)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)

  • 2 teaspoon Oil
  • 1-1/4 cup Water
  • 2 Dry Red Chilli

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 40 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Roast the Dal:
Heat a kadhai and dry roast the Arhar dal (split toor dal) for a few minutes, or until it emits a pleasant aroma. Once roasted, set it aside to cool down.

  2. Grind the Dal:
After cooling, grind the roasted dal to a fine powder.

  3. Prepare the Tempering:
In a heavy-bottomed kadhai, heat oil and temper with dry red chillies and whole black peppercorns.

  4. Cook the Spices:
Add the coriander powder, cumin powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, and salt to the kadhai. Pour in about 2 tablespoons of water and fry the mixture for a minute to enhance the flavors.

  5. Combine and Cook:
Add the powdered dal to the kadhai, mix well, and pour in the remaining water. Cook the mixture on a medium to low flame, stirring occasionally. Continue cooking for 20-30 minutes, or until the dish thickens to your desired consistency.

  6. Finish and Serve:
Once the Chainsoo is ready, switch off the gas and serve hot. Enjoy Uttarakhand Style Black Gram Chainsoo with steamed rice and spicy baby potatoes for a fulfilling lunch.
