Bengali Posto Bhat (Poppy Seed Rice)

Description: Posto Bhat is a traditional Bengali dish made with raw poppy seed paste mixed with mustard oil, green and red chilies, and then combined with cooked basmati rice. This rich and flavorful dish is often served at the start of a meal, accompanied by hot green chili bites. The poppy seed paste is prepared using a mortar and pestle to bring out the authentic taste, and the addition of red chilies enhances the flavor and texture. Once prepared, this dish is both satisfying and soothing, leaving you ready for a restful nap.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup Water (for soaking)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 1 Dry Red Chilli
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard oil
  • 3 cups Basmati rice (cooked)

Preparation Time: 140 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Begin by washing and soaking the poppy seeds in water for at least 2 hours. After soaking, strain out any excess water.
  2. In a mixer, combine the soaked poppy seeds with 1/2 cup of water (or less, depending on the consistency you prefer), salt, green chili, and dry red chili.
  3. Blend until smooth, then transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and add mustard oil. Mix well to combine.
  4. In a large bowl, add the freshly cooked basmati rice. Gradually fold the poppy seed mixture into the rice, ensuring the paste evenly coats the rice.
  5. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.
  6. Serve your Bengali Posto Bhat with a side of Burani Raita and Aloo Parwal Sabzi for a perfect Sunday meal.
