Red Chilli Coconut Chutney Recipe

This Red Chilli Coconut Chutney is a delicious and flavorful condiment that pairs perfectly with South Indian breakfast items like dosa and idli. The combination of roasted red chillies and fresh coconut, along with the seasoning, gives it an irresistible taste.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh coconut, chopped
  • 1/2 cup small onions, chopped
  • 2-3 cloves garlic
  • 1 1/2 inches ginger, grated
  • 5-6 dried red chillies
  • 2 tablespoons roasted chana dal
  • Salt to taste
  • For tempering:
    • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
    • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    • 2 sprigs curry leaves
    • 1 teaspoon white urad dal
    • 2 dried red chillies
    • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Heat a small pan and add coconut oil. Let it heat up, then add small onions and garlic. Cook until they turn golden brown, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In a mixer grinder, add onions, garlic, dried red chillies, ginger, coconut, chana dal, and salt. Add a little water and grind into a smooth paste. Transfer the chutney to a bowl and set aside.
  3. For tempering, heat a pan and add coconut oil. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter for about 15 seconds.
  4. Add urad dal and cook until it turns golden brown. Add curry leaves and dried red chillies, and cook for another 30 seconds.
  5. Pour the tempering over the chutney and mix well.
  6. Serve the Red Chilli Coconut Chutney with ghee-roasted dosa, idli, or your favorite South Indian breakfast dish.
