Goan Style Bimblanche Sasav (Bimbla Raita)

Description:
Bimbla Raita, also known as Bimbla Sasav in Goa, is a simple and delicious sweet and sour condiment that pairs wonderfully with an Indian vegetarian meal. This dish, made from the Bimbla fruit (Bilimbi), is refreshing and can also be enjoyed as a dip. The fruit is native to the cucumber tree or tree sorrel, commonly found in Kerala, parts of Karnataka, and Goa. In addition to being eaten raw, Bimbla is used in pickles, salads, and other traditional dishes.

Cuisine: Goan Recipes
Course: Side Dish
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

  • 6 Bimbla (Bilimbi) fruits
  • 1/2 cup Fresh coconut, grated
  • 2 Green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu)
  • 20 grams Jaggery
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • Salt, to taste

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bimbla:
In a medium saucepan, add the washed Bimbla fruits along with 1 cup of water. Boil on high heat until the fruits soften. Retain the water as it will be used later for grinding.

  2. Toast the Coconut:
In a kadai or frying pan, heat a little oil and toast the grated coconut over low heat until it turns slightly brown. Once toasted, transfer it to a plate to cool.

  3. Fry the Green Chillies and Mustard Seeds:
In the same pan, add a bit of oil and fry the green chillies for a few seconds. Remove them from the pan and set aside. Next, roast the mustard seeds in the same pan until they begin to pop, then remove from heat and set aside.

  4. Grind the Ingredients:
In a mixer grinder, combine the toasted coconut, fried green chillies, roasted mustard seeds, jaggery, and salt. Add a little of the water from boiling the Bimbla to help with grinding. Grind the mixture for about a minute until it forms a thick paste, similar to coconut chutney.

  5. Mix with Bimbla:
Add the boiled Bimbla fruits to the grinder and pulse for a few seconds until everything is well combined and mushy.

  6. Serve:
Serve the Goan Style Bimblanche Sasav as a side dish, ideally alongside Feijoada (Spicy Goan Black Eyed Peas Stew), pav, and steamed rice.

Enjoy the sweet and tangy flavors of this unique Goan delicacy as a perfect accompaniment to your meal!
