Cuisine: Asian
Course: Appetizer
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Potato (Aloo) 1 medium-sized
Carrot (Gajjar) 1/2 cup, grated
Cheese 1 cup, grated
Black pepper powder 3/4 teaspoon
Garlic powder 1 teaspoon
Extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons
Salt To taste

Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Servings: 4-6

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:

    • Begin by peeling and boiling the potato until it’s soft and easily mashable. Once cooked, mash the potato thoroughly, making sure there are no lumps.
  2. Add Carrots and Spices:

    • Grate the carrots and mix them into the mashed potatoes. Add in the black pepper powder, garlic powder, olive oil, and salt. Stir everything together to ensure the flavors are well-distributed throughout the mixture.
  3. Form the Potato Balls:

    • Grease your palms lightly with oil. Take around 2 tablespoons of the prepared potato mixture and flatten it into a thin disc on your palm.
    • Place about 2 teaspoons of grated cheese (use any cheese of your preference) in the center of the mashed potato disc.
    • Gently fold the edges over the cheese and form a round ball. Repeat this process with the remaining potato mixture and cheese.
  4. Cook the Balls:

    • Heat a paniyaram pan (also known as kuzhi paniyaram pan) on medium heat. To check if the pan is ready, sprinkle a little water on the surface — it should sizzle when hot.
    • Once heated, drop about 3-4 drops of olive oil into each cavity of the pan. Carefully place the potato balls into the cavities, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Reduce the heat to medium and allow the balls to cook for about 5 minutes or until they are golden and crisp on the bottom.
    • Flip each ball carefully and cook for another 5 minutes on the other side until both sides are crispy and golden brown.
  5. Serve:

    • Once cooked, remove the cheese-stuffed mashed potato balls from the pan. Serve them hot with your favorite dips like Easy Homemade Queso Dip, tangy tomato ketchup, or as an accompaniment to Homemade Nachos.

These non-fried, crispy cheese-stuffed mashed potato balls are sure to be a hit at any gathering. They’re simple to make, packed with flavor, and offer a fun twist on a classic comfort food.
