Narkoler Chanch (Bengali Style Coconut Block)

Description:
Narkoler Chanch, also known as Bengali Style Coconut Block, is a cherished traditional dessert that originates from the heart of Bengali kitchens. Passed down from generation to generation, this unique sweet dish combines the richness of fresh coconut with the creaminess of milk, infused with the warm aroma of cardamom. The secret to its delightful texture and shape lies in an old stone block, which has been lovingly inherited from my grandmother’s collection. This stone block imparts a beautiful imprint and texture to the coconut mixture, making it not only a treat for the taste buds but also for the eyes.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Fresh coconut (scraped) 2 cups
Milk 2 cups
Sugar 1-1/2 cups
Cardamom Powder (Elaichi) 1 teaspoon
Ghee 2 tablespoons

Preparation Time

Time 30 minutes

Cooking Time

Time 75 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Coconut Mixture:

    • Begin by blending the fresh scraped coconut with milk, sugar, and cardamom powder in a food processor. Process until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Cook the Mixture:

    • Transfer the coconut mixture into a heavy-bottomed pan and cook it over low to medium heat. Stir continuously, allowing the mixture to boil and reduce. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, becomes dry yet slightly moist, and can form a dough-like consistency. This process may take about 75 minutes.
  3. Shape the Coconut Blocks:

    • Once the coconut mixture has reached the desired consistency, brush the stone block generously with ghee to prevent sticking.
    • Take a handful of the cooked coconut mixture and flatten it onto the stone block, spreading it evenly. Press the mixture lightly to imprint the beautiful textures and patterns from the stone block.
    • Carefully and slowly remove the coconut block from the stone, preserving the shape and design.
  4. Final Steps:

    • Repeat the process with the remaining coconut mixture until all portions are shaped and imprinted on the stone block.
  5. Serving Suggestions:

    • Narkoler Chanch can be served as a delightful dessert after a traditional Bengali meal. Pair it with delicious dishes like Bengali Chapor Ghonto, Bengali Style Lau Die Tetor Dal, and Bengali Luchi for a complete and satisfying meal.

Notes:

  • The stone block used in this recipe is an essential part of giving Narkoler Chanch its unique texture and design. If you don’t have one, you can also shape the mixture into squares or rectangles, though the traditional stone imprint is highly recommended.
  • This dessert can be stored in an airtight container and enjoyed for up to a week. Its flavors intensify and become even more delightful over time.

Enjoy this Bengali treasure and bring a taste of tradition into your kitchen with Narkoler Chanch!
