Build Your Own Rice Paper Wrappers π―
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 2 or more guests
Description:
This dish is perfect for gatherings with 2 or more guests, allowing everyone to get creative and build their own Asian rolls! As the host, it’s recommended to prepare 6 or 8 rolls ahead of time, ensuring they are covered with a damp cloth to prevent the rice paper from drying out. These rice paper wrappers are light, delicate, and bursting with flavor. For variety, consider adding ingredients like toasted sesame seeds, bamboo shoots, or Peking duck.
Ingredients:
- 2 lettuce leaves
- 1 bok choy, shredded
- 1 carrot, julienned
- 1 cucumber, julienned
- 1 cup bean sprouts
- 2 green mangoes, julienned
- 2 sprigs of fresh mint
- 1/4 cup baby shrimp
- 1/4 cup cooked chicken breast, shredded
- 1 package rice paper sheets
Instructions:
Step | Description |
---|---|
1 | Prepare the Serving Platter: Arrange the shredded lettuce or bok choy in the center of a large serving platter, board, or tray. This will serve as the base for building the rice paper wrappers. |
2 | Prepare the Ingredients: Place the carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts, spinach, mango, mushrooms, peanuts, herbs, shrimp, and chicken in individual piles or bowls around the lettuce or bok choy. This setup allows guests to easily access and choose their fillings. |
3 | Set Up Rolling Stations: Place a small, damp terry cloth towel on each serving plate. This will make the rolling of the wrapper easier for your guests. They can also use it to wipe their fingers as they assemble their personal rice paper wrappers. |
4 | Soften the Rice Paper: Fill a medium-sized clean bowl with warm water. You and your guests will use this to dip the rice paper for 2 to 3 seconds until it becomes soft and pliable. |
5 | Assemble the Wrappers: Gently remove a softened rice paper sheet and place it onto the damp terry cloth towel on your serving plate. |
6 | Choose Your Fillings: Now comes the fun part! Fill your rice paper wrapper with a combination of the prepared ingredients. Be sure not to overfill each wrapper to make rolling easier. |
7 | Roll the Wrappers: Fold in the ends of the rice paper, then tightly roll the wrapper around the fillings. The dampness of the rice paper will help seal the wrapper shut. |
8 | Serve with Dipping Sauces: Offer a variety of dipping sauces such as Garlic Dipping Sauce, Ginger Sauce, sweet and sour, or hot chili dips. Place these sauces in small bowls alongside the rice paper wrappers for dipping. |
Tips:
- To keep rice paper wrappers from sticking together, separate each sheet with a damp cloth or parchment paper.
- Get creative with your fillings! Consider adding sliced avocado, bell peppers, tofu, or even thinly sliced beef for different flavor combinations.
- Encourage guests to mix and match ingredients to create their perfect rice paper rolls.
- If preparing ahead of time, cover the assembled rice paper wrappers with damp paper towels and plastic wrap to keep them fresh.
