Sapi Lada Hitam (Indonesian Black Pepper Beef)

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams beef, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cm ginger, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • Salt and white pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons coarsely ground black pepper
  • A splash of oil for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Thinly slice the beef and marinate it with soy sauce and a bit of minced garlic. Let it sit for a few minutes to absorb the flavors.

  2. Sauté Aromatics: Heat a splash of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and finely chopped ginger. Sauté until fragrant and the onion becomes translucent.

  3. Cook the Beef: Add the marinated beef to the pan. Cook until the beef changes color and is browned on the outside.

  4. Add Sauces: Stir in the oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce, and white pepper. Mix well to coat the beef evenly with the sauces.

  5. Simmer: Add a small amount of water (about 4 tablespoons) to the pan. Stir the mixture and let it simmer until the liquid reduces slightly.

  6. Season and Add Vegetables: Season with salt to taste. Add the sliced green and red bell peppers to the pan. Cook until the peppers are tender and the sauce has thickened to your liking.

  7. Finish with Black Pepper: Sprinkle coarsely ground black pepper over the dish and stir well. Allow it to cook for an additional minute to blend the flavors.

  8. Serve: Transfer the Sapi Lada Hitam to a serving dish and enjoy it hot with steamed rice or noodles.
