Servings and Yield
- Yield: 12 rolls
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup warm water 🌊
- 1 packet (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast 🌾
- 2 tablespoons sugar 🍬
- 1 cup warm milk 🥛
- 1/4 cup butter, softened (plus extra for brushing) 🧈
- 1 large egg 🥚
- 1 teaspoon salt 🧂
- 3 cups bread flour 🍞
- Additional butter (for the center of each roll) 🧈
Instructions
-
Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, add the sugar to the warm water and stir until dissolved. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to go. -
Mix Wet Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, 1/4 cup of softened butter, and the egg. Mix well. Once the yeast mixture is foamy, add it to the milk mixture and stir to combine. -
Prepare the Dry Ingredients:
In a food processor, add the bread flour and salt. Pulse a few times to mix the ingredients evenly. -
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
With the food processor running, slowly pour the liquid mixture through the feed tube. Process until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the processor bowl. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time. -
First Rise:
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it briefly to form a smooth ball. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place until it has doubled in size. This should take about 1 hour. -
Shape the Rolls:
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece slightly and place a small pat of butter (about 1/4 to 1/2 pat) in the center. Fold the dough around the butter, pinch to seal, and shape each piece into a ball. -
Second Rise:
Place the shaped rolls on a lightly greased baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart. Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again until they have doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes. -
Bake the Rolls:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. -
Cool and Serve:
Allow the rolls to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy them warm with a pat of butter for an extra indulgent treat.
Tips and Tricks
- Temperature Matters: Ensure that the water and milk are warm, but not too hot. The ideal temperature is around 110°F (43°C). If the liquid is too hot, it can kill the yeast.
- Rising Environment: If your kitchen is cool, you can create a warm rising environment by placing the dough in an oven with the light on or on top of a warm appliance.
- Freezing the Rolls: These rolls freeze well. After they have cooled completely, place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. To reheat, thaw at room temperature and warm in the oven at 300°F (150°C) for 10 minutes.
