Ingredients

Ingredients Quantity
Cabbage (Patta Gobi/ Muttaikose) 500 grams, roughly chopped or thinly sliced
Mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu) 1 teaspoon
White Urad Dal (Split) 1-1/2 teaspoons
Curry leaves 1 sprig, finely chopped
Green Chilli 1, slit
Fresh coconut (grated) 1/4 cup
Salt To taste

Preparation Time

15 minutes

Cooking Time

30 minutes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
Begin by chopping or slicing the cabbage into thin pieces. Ensure that the rest of the ingredients are ready—grate the fresh coconut, slit the green chilli, and chop the curry leaves finely.

  2. Heat the Oil:
In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat 1 teaspoon of oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds and allow them to crackle. Next, add the white urad dal and roast it lightly until it turns golden brown.

  3. Add Seasonings and Cabbage:
Once the dal is browned, add the chopped curry leaves and the slit green chilli to the pan. Stir them for a few seconds to release their aroma. Add the chopped cabbage along with salt to taste. Give everything a good stir to combine.

  4. Steam the Cabbage:
Sprinkle a little water over the cabbage to help it cook. Cover the pan and allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes. The cabbage should be tender but still retain a slight firmness for the best texture.

  5. Finish the Dish:
Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, stir in the grated coconut. Mix thoroughly and check the salt levels. You can add more coconut if you prefer a richer flavor. Turn off the heat.

  6. Serve:
Serve the Muttaikose Poriyal warm. This dish pairs beautifully with Tomato Rasam and steamed rice drizzled with ghee, making it an ideal addition to any South Indian meal.
