Cook Time: 1 hour
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour and 10 minutes
Servings: 6
Description:
In olden days, this pudding was cooked in a Dutch oven hanging over an open fire. The name “Grunt” presumably came from the sound the pudding made as it bubbled and grunted beneath the biscuit-like topping. This timeless dessert brings together the comforting flavors of apples, nuts, and a sweet, cake-like batter, creating a delightful treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 2 apples, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- Ice cream or whipped cream, for serving
Instructions:
-
Prepare Dutch Oven:
- Melt butter in an 8-inch Dutch oven over medium heat, ensuring the bottom is evenly coated.
-
Prepare Batter:
- Remove 2 tablespoons of melted butter and place them in a mixing bowl.
- To the mixing bowl, add granulated sugar and egg. Beat until well combined.
- Pour in milk and continue mixing until smooth.
-
Prepare Topping:
- Add brown sugar to the Dutch oven with melted butter. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved, creating a caramel-like mixture.
- Arrange the sliced apples evenly over the brown sugar mixture in the Dutch oven.
- Sprinkle chopped walnuts over the apples, distributing them evenly.
-
Combine Batter and Apples:
- Mix salt and baking powder into the batter.
- Gradually add flour to the batter, stirring until smooth and no lumps remain.
- Pour the batter over the arranged apples in the Dutch oven, ensuring it covers them completely.
-
Cook the Grunt:
- Cover the Dutch oven tightly with a lid or foil to trap the steam.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer the grunt for 1 hour, allowing the flavors to meld and the cake to cook through.
-
Serve:
- Once the grunt is cooked, loosen the edges with a spatula.
- Carefully invert the Dutch oven onto a serving platter, allowing the caramelized apple topping to cascade over the cake.
- Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream for a truly indulgent treat.
