Ingredients:
- 1 package of phyllo dough (approximately 16 sheets)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions:
-
Preheat the Oven:
Begin by preheating your oven to 375ºF (190ºC). This ensures that the oven is at the right temperature for even baking. -
Caramelize the Onions:
In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced yellow onions, minced garlic, and brown sugar. Sauté the mixture for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized—meaning they should be very brown and soft. This process develops a sweet, rich flavor that forms the heart of your tart. -
Prepare the Egg Mixture:
While the onions are caramelizing, in a large mixing bowl, combine the beaten eggs, sour cream, chopped dill, flour, shredded Swiss cheese, and 2 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. Stir until all ingredients are well mixed. -
Combine Onions and Egg Mixture:
Once the onions are caramelized, transfer them to the egg mixture. Stir until the onions are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. -
Assemble the Tart:
Lightly grease an 8-10 inch springform pan. Lay two sheets of phyllo dough into the bottom of the pan, ensuring they cover the base completely. Brush the phyllo with melted butter or spray with oil.Place another two sheets of phyllo dough over the first layer, this time arranging them in the opposite direction. Again, brush with butter or spray with oil. Continue layering and brushing the phyllo dough, making sure to cover the bottom and sides of the pan completely. Use additional sheets if needed.
-
Add the Filling:
Pour the prepared onion and egg mixture into the phyllo-lined pan. Spread it out evenly. -
Cover and Finish:
Fold the overhanging phyllo dough over the filling to cover it. Brush the top with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese. -
Bake:
Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the tart is set. -
Cool and Serve:
Allow the tart to sit for about 5 minutes after baking. Carefully release the sides of the springform pan and let the tart cool for another 5 minutes before slicing. This helps the tart to set and makes slicing easier.Serve warm or at room temperature for a delightful treat that’s sure to impress!
Enjoy the layered goodness of this Onion Phyllo Tart, a savory pie that marries the crisp texture of phyllo dough with the sweet and rich flavor of caramelized onions. Whether served as a main course or a special side, it’s sure to be a hit at any meal. 🍽️✨
