Puerto Rican Red Beans and Rice 🇵🇷
Description: When we lived in Puerto Rico, this was a favorite meal. We’re back in the States now, but when I make Red Beans and Rice it transports me back to La Isla Del Encanto! It can be eaten as a meal itself or with a simple salad.

Ingredients:
Quantity | Ingredient |
---|---|
1/2 | lean ham |
1/2 | onion |
1/2 | green bell pepper |
1/2 | chorizo sausage |
1 | olive oil |
2 | garlic cloves |
1 | teaspoon ground cumin |
1 | can (15 oz) red kidney beans |
1 | cup tomato sauce |
1 | teaspoon Tabasco sauce (or adjust to taste) |
2 | cups white rice |
1/2 | teaspoon salt |
Instructions:
-
Prepare Ingredients: Gather all the ingredients – lean ham, onion, green bell pepper, chorizo sausage, olive oil, garlic cloves, ground cumin, red kidney beans, tomato sauce, Tabasco sauce, white rice, and salt.
-
Heat Olive Oil: Over medium heat, heat the olive oil in a large saucepan.
-
Sauté Aromatics: Add the lean ham, chorizo sausage, onion, green bell pepper, garlic cloves (minced), and ground cumin to the saucepan. Sauté until the vegetables are tender and the aromatics release their flavors, creating a tantalizing scent.
-
Add Beans and Sauce: Stir in the red kidney beans (drained and rinsed), tomato sauce, and Tabasco sauce. Let the flavors mingle as you simmer the mixture for about 5 minutes, allowing the ingredients to meld together beautifully.
-
Incorporate Rice: Add the white rice to the saucepan, along with 4 cups of water. Stir everything together until well combined.
-
Bring to Boil: Increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep a watchful eye as it starts bubbling away.
-
Simmer: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the Puerto Rican Red Beans and Rice simmer gently. Allow the rice to absorb the flavors of the beans and spices, cooking until tender. This process usually takes about 20-25 minutes.
-
Serve: Once the rice is tender and all the flavors have melded together beautifully, remove the saucepan from the heat. Serve your delicious Puerto Rican Red Beans and Rice hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
