Instructions:

1 In a saucepan, cook the macaroni according to the package instructions.
2 Drain the cooked macaroni and transfer it into a large mixing bowl.
3 In a separate pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
4 Once the butter is melted, add the flour and whisk until combined, cooking for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
5 Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid any lumps from forming. Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens and becomes bubbly. This usually takes around 5-7 minutes.
6 Add the shredded cheddar cheese and finely chopped onion to the milk mixture. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
7 Pour the cheese sauce over the cooked macaroni in the mixing bowl. Gently mix until the macaroni is evenly coated with the cheese sauce.
8 Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
9 Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture into the greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
10 Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the macaroni and cheese.
11 Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.
